Detroit Dark Red (DDR) Beetroot is one of the most enduring and widely loved heirloom beet varieties, first introduced in the late 19th century in Detroit, USA. Celebrated for over a century, it quickly became the standard beet in home gardens and markets because of its reliability, uniform roots, and rich flavor.
The roots are deep crimson red, smooth, and globe-shaped, with tender flesh that holds its color beautifully even after cooking. Its taste is sweet, earthy, and robust, making it perfect for everything from fresh salads and juices to roasted dishes, curries, and traditional pickles. The greens are equally valuable—nutrient-packed and delicious when sautéed or added to soups.
