The Jwala Chilli, also known as Pusa Jwala, is one of India’s most famous chilli varieties, cherished for its fiery flavor and reliable performance in home gardens. Developed at the Indian Agricultural Research Institute (IARI), Pusa Jwala traces its roots to the traditional chillies of Gujarat, where it became especially popular and earned its name “Jwala,” meaning flame in Hindi—apt for its heat and vibrant red fruits.
The plants are highly productive, producing long, slender chillies that can be harvested green or allowed to ripen to a deep red. Known for their sharp, pungent heat and distinct aroma, Jwala chillies are widely used in everyday Indian cooking—whether for tempering dals, spicing up curries, or drying into chilli flakes and powders.
