An ancient green enjoyed across the world, Purslane (known locally as Paruppu Keerai in Tamil Nadu) is believed to have originated in India and the Middle East, later spreading to Europe, Africa, and the Americas. Highly valued in both traditional cooking and herbal medicine, it is one of the most nutrient-dense leafy greens you can grow.
With its small, succulent leaves and tender stems, Purslane has a refreshing, slightly tangy and lemony taste with a pleasant crunch. In Indian kitchens, it is often cooked into dals, kootu, or stir-fries, while internationally it’s used in salads, soups, and stews. Rich in Omega-3 fatty acids, vitamins A, C, E, and minerals, it’s considered a superfood that supports health and vitality.
